Cyclists we NEED you!
We want your support for a dedicated, safe, off-road cycleway along the Derwent Valley, off the A6.
Please show your support by joining us on the 18th May for one of our two events, the family ride for everyone, or the A6 ride for experienced riders only.
If you don’t fancy cycling but are keen to show your support, why not donate or sign up to be a volunteer on the day! Please find further information on how you can get involved below.
The Family Ride For Everyone
Join us for a cycle from Rowsley to Matlock. This ride is approximately 5 miles and is suitable for all abilities and ages and there will be marshals and signs along the length of the route.
Please note that children below the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and children cycling on their own bike must be 7 years or older. Riders will ride at their own speed and at their own risk.
There is a £5 entry fee for the event.
The Family Ride will start at the Rowsley Peak Rail station car park at Rowsley, Matlock DE4 2LF. A briefing will be held at 11.15am and riders will be set off in groups from 11.30 am to 12 noon. Please ensure you arrive with plenty of time to register before the briefing.

The A6 Ride For Experienced Cyclists
Join us for a cycle ride from Derby to Matlock. This ride is approximately 20 miles and is suitable for experienced cyclists only. There will be marshals and signs along the route.
Please note you must be over 18 to enter this ride. Riders will ride at their own speed and at their own risk. Note that the road will not be closed for this event so riders need to be aware of the other traffic.
There is a £5 entry fee for the event.
The event will start at The University of Derby, Kedleston Rd, Derby DE22 1GB. A briefing will be held at 10.15am and 10.45am, and riders will be set off in groups from 10.30 am to 11.30am. Please ensure you arrive with plenty of time to register before the briefing.
To sign up for the A6 ride please see below:
Both rides will finish at Hall Leys Park, Matlock where there will be food (charges apply) and entertainment between 12pm and 2:30pm. We also hope to have speeches from local MPs and Councillors showing their support for the cycleway between 1 and 1.30pm . We ask all riders to wait in Matlock until the start of the speeches when there will be a collective photograph taken
Riders can either make their own way back to the start by bike, or get collected by friend/family car at the finish.
What is included in the Event?
Everyone who registers online before the event will receive a t-shirt at registration on the day. We would love you all to wear these on the ride!
Silly Hat Competition
Please make, steal, buy or borrow a silly hat to wear over your helmet, ideally while you’re riding but, if this is not practicable, then upon arrival at Matlock.
This is a non-profit event which relies on donations for it to be a success. Any money made from the event will go back into the project to make the cycleway a reality.
We are looking for volunteers to help run the event. If you would be interested in supporting us on the day please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Why do we need your support?
Look at any map of cycleways in Britain and at its heart is an obvious gap.
There is no safe route along the Derwent Valley from Derby to connect to the High Peak Trail at Cromford or the Monsal Trail north of Matlock.
The Derwent Valley Trust, the charity which established the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, a walking route along the valley, is trying to plug this gap by creating a new cycleway.
The multi-user route is to be off-highway through its entire length, through the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site to Chatsworth, providing safe access for families to the various historic sites and visitor attractions, and beautiful countryside, without cycling up the dangerous winding A6, intensely trafficked with Heavy Goods Vehicles.
Primarily a route for leisure and commuter cyclists, it will be accessible to all users, young and old, novice and experienced, and generally assist in encouraging people to use their cars less and be more active in accessing places without producing noise and fumes so they appreciate better the land they travel through.
